Victoria composed his masterpiece for the funeral of Dowager Empress Maria of Spain in Madrid in 1605. ‘Its refined and dignified austerity is shot through with passionate conviction; it glows with extraordinary fervour within a musical and spiritual atmosphere of serenity and fitness for its liturgical purpose’ (Bruno Turner). It stands as one of the greatest monuments of the Renaissance period. The choir will interleave the movements of the Requiem with some of the most heart-wrenchingly beautiful and poignant motets by the choir’s patron Sir James MacMillan.
