In another of the choir’s regular appearances at the English Music Festival, we celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with a programme entitled ‘A Garland for the Queen’. We shall perform the whole of the part-song collection of that name, commissioned for the Queen’s coronation from many of the leading composers of the day: Bliss, Bax, Tippett, Vaughan Williams, Berkeley, Ireland, Howells, Finzi, Rawsthorne and Rubbra. This will be followed by the beautiful Missa Brevis composed for Canterbury Cathedral by Richard Rodney Bennett in 2004, and the little-known but intensely powerful ’Songs of Escape’ (1935) by Robin Milford. The programme will be rounded off by a selection of English folksong arrangements.
